The Chamberlain Network Urges Restraint Over Minnesota National Guard Deployment
Atlanta, GA - The Chamberlain Network recognizes Governor Tim Walz’s decision to deploy the Minnesota National Guard as a step to stabilize a community under intense strain after agents from the Department of Homeland Security shot Alex Pretti during an operation. With tensions rising and public trust already frayed, National Guard members may play an important role in preventing further harm and keeping the public safe. At the same time, it is clear that this moment was driven by federal enforcement actions that have inflamed an already volatile situation.
Now that Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt has asked Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to send the National Guard under state control to support deputies at the Whipple Federal Building, The Chamberlain Network urges caution and restraint. Citizen-soldiers should not be drawn into political confrontations that risk further harm or erode community trust. State violence is particularly damaging to democracy and becomes more likely as tensions rise.
“The National Guard troops have an obligation to serve the citizens of their state and the ideals of our Constitution,” said Christopher Purdy, Founder and CEO of The Chamberlain Network. “That means protecting the rights and liberties of their neighbors from abuse. The Minnesota National Guard must be used to preserve peace and public safety, not supporting the aggressive federal enforcement operations that have caused this crisis.”
We call on state leaders to ensure that the National Guard’s role remains limited to protecting life, safeguarding peaceful expression, and supporting de-escalation. We also urge transparent missions with robust civilian oversight, so that the National Guard’s presence promotes healing rather than widening divisions.
